Count Your Pennies
Beginning to understand an immersion factor

You might use the little boats students created in the What Floats, What Sails activity to find out how much a boat will sink in the water as you add weight. How many pennies can different boats hold? How much does a boat settle from the addition of one penny? Express immersion factors in pennies per inch, the number of pennies you can add to a boat to cause it to settle one inch in the water.

Have on Hand- boats from lesson 1 (or a toy boat), a ruler, a basin of water and 25 pennies
