Discovering the Past Through Objects
Understanding inference

Tell the class that since we were not there to see history with our own eyes, we must infer it, or arrive at conclusions by reasoning from evidence. To give students a sense of what this means, ask them to pick one of the artifacts on the previous page and answer the following questions.

1. What might this artifact tell you about the past?
2. What additional artifacts or evidence might you need to draw further conclusions?
3. List several possibilities for verifying the authenticity of the artifact you chose.
